debt-to-equity ratio
Lenders and rating agencies watch this ratio because it sets how much room a company has before new borrowing gets expensive. Obligations that sit in footnotes rather than on the balance sheet do not enter the ratio until they are recognised, so a company can look less levered than its signed commitments imply.
