Samsung Electronics splits its business into DS, which runs semiconductors, and DX, which runs phones and consumer electronics. DS stands for Device Solutions and contains the memory business that makes DRAM and NAND, the foundry business that manufactures other companies' chips, and System LSI, which designs non-memory chips such as image sensors. When memory prices are rising, most of the group's operating profit comes from this one division, which makes it the first number to look at in Samsung's results.
