foreshock

A foreshock is only identifiable in hindsight: it looks exactly like a mainshock until a bigger one follows. In the 2016 Kumamoto sequence the first intensity-7 quake was treated as the mainshock, and a larger one arrived two days later. That asymmetry is why plants restart in stages instead of all at once after a big quake.
