GlobalFoundries was spun out of AMD's manufacturing arm in 2009 and later absorbed Chartered Semiconductor and IBM's chip fabs. It stepped away from the race to the smallest transistor and instead sells capacity for automotive, radio frequency, power and silicon photonics work, where the value is in specialized processes rather than raw density. Its main plants are in Malta, New York; Essex Junction, Vermont; Dresden; and Singapore.
