Founded in 1987 by Ren Zhengfei, Huawei grew into one of the world's largest telecom equipment and smartphone makers before US export restrictions starting in 2019 cut it off from Western chip technology. Since then it has pushed hard into designing its own AI accelerator chips, the Ascend series, and rack-scale systems like the 950 SuperNode, positioning itself as China's main domestic alternative to Nvidia. It remains privately held and does not disclose detailed financials.
