liquidity

Liquidity describes how freely money and credit flow through banks, markets and the broader economy. Central banks add liquidity by lending to banks or buying assets, which tends to lower borrowing costs and support asset prices; they drain it by doing the reverse. Tight liquidity can show up as higher short-term borrowing costs or stress in funding markets even when headline interest rates haven't moved.
