non-operating income

The counterpart to operating profit. Operating profit comes from selling products or services; non-operating income comes from things like selling or revaluing shares and stakes the company holds, interest income, or currency gains. When pretax profit jumps mainly because of non-operating income rather than operating profit, that growth is more likely a one-off than proof the core business improved, which is why it's worth checking operating profit separately from pretax or net income.
