pretax profit

The profit a company has just before corporate tax is deducted, also called pretax profit. Subtract tax from this and you get net income. Pretax profit alone doesn't show whether the gain came from the core business (operating profit) or a one-off like a stake sale, so it needs to be read alongside operating profit rather than on its own.
