Copper wiring loses signal as heat the further it runs, which becomes a hard limit once tens of thousands of accelerators have to talk to each other. Silicon photonics makes the lasers and waveguides on the same silicon process used for chips, so the optical parts can be manufactured at chip scale and eventually packaged next to the processor itself.
