bid-ask spread
It is the toll you pay for immediacy: buy and sell in the same instant and you lose the spread. A wide spread, usually quoted in basis points of the price, means fewer participants are willing to stand on both sides, so a rush for the exit moves the price further. Heavy trading volume and a narrow spread often go together, but not always, and the exceptions are where exit costs surprise people.
