Two of the four most heavily traded US stocks are memory makers

A handful of stocks now dominate US market trading:

Nvidia, $NVDA, is the most actively traded stock in the US market, accounting for 3.0% of total market notional volume year-to-date.

This is followed by Micron, $MU, at 2.8%, Tesla, $TSLA, at 2.1%, and SanDisk, $SNDK, at 1.5%.…

Three percent of every dollar traded in the US stock market this year passed through Nvidia alone.

Micron sits second at 2.8%, Tesla third at 2.1% and SanDisk fourth at 1.5%. Put the ten most traded names together and they average 16.4% of notional volume year to date.

A memory maker taking second place is a 2026 development. In 2024 the top two seats belonged to Nvidia and Tesla.

Why a memory maker ended up here

Memory was treated as a cheap component until last year.

TrendForce put the rise in conventional DRAM contract prices at 93% to 98% in a single quarter. When the price nearly doubles, the income statement flips with it. Micron's revenue over the past twelve months came to $90.3 billion, up 167%, and net income to $50.5 billion, up 711%. The faster a price moves, the more trading there is that tries to front-run the next quarter's numbers. That is the story sitting underneath a memory name climbing the volume table.

Trading a lot and being easy to trade

The two sound alike and are not. The bid-ask spread is the distance between what someone will pay right now and what someone will accept right now. A wide distance means you start underwater the moment you buy, and you have to give up more of the price when you need out in a hurry. The original post reported SanDisk's average spread at 12.4 basis points against an S&P 500 average of 5.9, more than double. It also said Tesla, Microsoft and Alphabet show smaller average order size resting at the best bid and offer than a typical S&P 500 stock.

Heavy notional volume means a lot of numbers move across this screen. It does not mean you can sell what you want at the price you want.

A high turnover rate means the price is set by hands that trade every day rather than by shareholders who hold on.

SanDisk's market capitalisation is $189.4 billion, less than a fifth of Micron's. Yet its average daily turnover runs about $12.0 billion, roughly half of Micron's. The same money is sloshing around inside a far smaller vessel.

Sherwood News, citing Bloomberg data, reported that Micron began outrunning Nvidia on daily dollar volume from March. The original tally is cumulative from the start of the year, so Nvidia still leads it, but on recent daily averages the order has already changed.

The count to redo on 31 December

This is where the two numbers part company. If Micron's average daily turnover is still above Nvidia's at the year-end close, the handover has set; if Nvidia climbs back on top, this year's ranking stays a few months of a memory price spike. Either way, the cost of getting out when prices shake is higher in the names that turn over fastest.

In three lines
  • Nvidia drew the most trading money in the US market this year, followed by Micron, Tesla and SanDisk.
  • On the surface that reads as liquidity being deepest where the money is thickest.
  • Yet SanDisk, less than a fifth of Micron's size, turns over about 6% of itself every day.
