In a lithography scanner the light source, lenses and wafer stage must stay aligned to the nanometer for circuits to print correctly. That alignment is fixed at the factory over weeks against hundreds of reference points, so opening the machine throws it off and it is hard to restore without the maker's procedures and software keys. This is why holding a finished tool does not make reverse engineering easy.
