Dysprosium

A neodymium magnet weakens as its temperature rises, and adding a few percent of dysprosium pushes that limit far higher. That makes it hard to avoid in EV traction motors, wind turbines and defense hardware. China supplies almost all of it and placed it under export licensing in April 2025, which is why a magnet can be made entirely in America and still depend on China.
