What turned MP profitable was not magnet sales but a shortfall the Pentagon paid in cash
The Department of Defense has already become MP's largest shareholder by putting $400 million of equity into it.
Through 2035 it has guaranteed a floor of $110 per kilogram on NdPr, the neodymium-praseodymium product that MP lives on.
Because there is a limit to how far backing MP alone can go, the bet is being spread to Niron's magnets, which use no rare earths at all.
MP Materials swung to a profit in the second quarter of 2026 not because magnets sold well, but because the U.S. Department of Defense paid it cash for the gap between the market price and a floor set in advance.
Revenue was $108.5 million and adjusted EBITDA was $28.5 million. A year earlier the same quarter showed a loss of $12.5 million. One of the lines that made the difference was $17.6 million of price protection income.
The floor at $110
The Pentagon has put a floor of $110 per kilogram, running to 2035, under NdPr, the neodymium-praseodymium feedstock that MP lives on. When the market price falls below that line, the difference arrives in cash each quarter. Think of it as a guaranteed purchase price for a crop. Even if the market collapses, what you harvest still fetches the agreed number. Why the device was needed sits in how China has cleared out Western rare earth producers before. It pushed prices below the cost of digging the ore, waited for rivals to close, and took the space they left. A floor makes that method stop working.

The one piece left inside 100% American
At the roundtable, chief executive Jim Litinsky said the magnet was mined and refined in California and built in Texas. The heavy rare earth dysprosium, which keeps a magnet from losing its pull as it heats up, is understood to still come from China. The hotter the job, an EV traction motor or defense hardware, the worse its absence hurts. Japan hit this wall first. In the 2010 Senkaku dispute it had no answer, but when shipments were cut in January 2026 it already had production lines for magnets that use no dysprosium or terbium, and a plant in Vietnam.
Making the magnet without the rare earth
The Niron Magnetics announcement Trump made the same day is a different kind of bet. Niron builds magnets from iron nitride, and both elements are everywhere.

It is a 20-year direct loan from the Office of Strategic Capital, and still at the conditional commitment stage. The $400 million that went into MP bought equity, while this one has to be paid back, so the two bets do not sit at the same place on the risk ladder. The Sartell, Minnesota plant is sized at 1,500 tonnes a year and targets 2027. Niron's magnets hold their strength below roughly 200 degrees Celsius, and the industry places full use in EV traction motors three to seven years out.
What the phrase ten times is still not enough actually means
Multiplying capacity by ten roughly covers what the United States buys as magnets. What it does not cover is the far larger volume that arrives already fitted inside motors and devices.

The first is around 10,000 tonnes, and adding the second brings the total near 40,000. When the 2028 plans are all standing, the first column fills and the second stays where it is. Demand that has to prove its ore back to the mine, defense above all, sits in the first column, so the urgent problem eases while full domestic supply stays far off.
September, when Xi comes to Washington
Two things settle this. One is whether MP's 10X plant actually reaches 10,000-tonne operation in 2028. The other is dysprosium. If Japan's deep-sea mining or one of the Greenland deposits turns into real supply, the footnote drops off 100% American; if both slip, magnets get built in America while the element that matters most in the hottest jobs still routes through China. Xi Jinping's visit to the United States, set for September 2026, falls in between. The floor price and the loan look less like industrial policy on its own schedule than like an attempt to cheapen the other side's card before that meeting starts.
