Glossary

forced selling

It covers forced liquidation of shares bought on margin when collateral falls short, selling by investors such as pension funds that must hold asset-class weights inside a cap, and the mechanical supply from index funds after a stock is removed from an index. Unlike ordinary selling it does not stop because the price got cheap. Prices set in a stretch dominated by forced selling therefore reflect the seller's constraints more than the asset's worth.
