Niron Magnetics

Niron Magnetics grew out of research at the University of Minnesota on iron nitride, a compound whose magnetism had been known since the 1950s but which nobody could reproduce reliably at scale. Because iron and nitrogen are abundant, a working magnet would sidestep Chinese control of rare earths entirely. Its magnets hold their strength below roughly 200 degrees Celsius, so early uses are speakers and headphones rather than traction motors.
