Qualcomm designs the Snapdragon chips that act as the brains of most Android smartphones. It owns no fabs, so its choice of which foundry and which process node to use is itself major industry news. It also holds a deep portfolio of wireless standards patents and collects royalties even on devices that do not carry its chips, and it has been pushing into automotive and PC silicon.
