Like slices drawn onto a pizza base, hundreds to thousands of identical chips are printed onto this disc at once and then cut apart. That's why chip output is counted in wafers per month. Bigger discs (300mm is today's standard) yield more chips per run, and wafer starts serve as a leading indicator of the chip cycle.
