Founded in Jena in 1846 as a microscope workshop, the company is now held by the Carl Zeiss Foundation. Its semiconductor arm, ZEISS SMT, makes the projection lenses and mirrors inside ASML's scanners, and the precision of that optics decides how fine a circuit can be printed. Much of what goes into an ASML tool comes from outside suppliers, and optics is considered the hardest of those to source anywhere else.
