Alphabet plans a 'frozen' chip that bakes Gemini into the silicon

The Kobeissi Letter relays a report from The Information that Alphabet is preparing a new kind of server chip nicknamed a 'frozen' chip. Instead of loading an AI model onto general-purpose hardware every time, the design bakes the blueprint of its Gemini model directly into the silicon. Freezing the model into the circuits removes a lot of the shuttling of data that normally slows things down, so the same answers come out using far less energy and hardware. Alphabet's own engineers reportedly estimate the chip could be six to ten times more efficient than the latest version of its existing AI chip line, the TPU. The catch is flexibility: a frozen chip is fast at running one model but hard to repurpose when the model changes, so it is a bet that Gemini's core stays stable long enough to pay back the custom silicon. The bigger picture is that another giant is going deeper into designing its own chips rather than buying more from Nvidia. If Google can serve its AI far cheaper per query, it strengthens the case that the most valuable AI companies will also be chip companies, and it adds one more customer quietly building an alternative to buying every accelerator off the shelf.
