SK hynix: We are actively considering additional shareholder return measures to enhance shareholder value, with the details to be finalized and announced during the third quarter.$SKHY

SK hynix has put two uses of its cash on the same calendar. The company said it is reviewing additional shareholder-return measures for a third-quarter announcement, while its board approved 54.3 trillion won of investment in Yongin and Cheongju through 2031. The plan allocates 35.2 trillion won to the second phase of Yongin and 19.1 trillion won to the M17 project in Cheongju.

Two uses for the cash

The second-quarter results explain why both topics can appear together. SK hynix reported 79.32 trillion won of revenue and 60.54 trillion won of operating profit in the quarter, with 88 trillion won in cash and cash equivalents. It also said it would reinforce production capacity and financial health while expanding long-term agreements with customers. Cash generation does not determine the eventual size of a buyback or dividend, but it gives the company room to discuss expansion and distribution at the same time.

At its March annual general meeting, SK hynix said it had already delivered 14.3 trillion won in shareholder returns and would continue reviewing dividends and buybacks. The new statement adds a timetable to that policy. The confirmed information today is the existing quarterly dividend of 375 won per share and a review process. The amount and form of any additional dividend, repurchase, or cancellation remain open.

The investment timetable is the test

The 54.3 trillion won plan will be spent in stages. Construction at Cheongju M17 is scheduled to start in February 2027, with its cleanroom targeted for December 2028. Yongin phase two is scheduled to start construction in July 2027, with cleanroom operations targeted for June 2029. A third-quarter return announcement will be more informative if these capacity milestones remain intact.

Concrete action such as an additional dividend, a buyback, or a cancellation would give the shareholder-return promise a measurable form. A statement without a specific measure, or a continuation of only the existing dividend, would leave the announcement as a cash-allocation intention. The key issue is whether SK hynix can keep its large capacity program on schedule while carrying out a clearly defined return policy.

In three lines
  • SK hynix will announce additional shareholder-return measures in the third quarter.
  • Its board approved 54.3 trillion won for Yongin and Cheongju capacity through 2031.
  • The next test is whether a concrete return plan coexists with the buildout schedule.
