On August 11, Nvidia Laid Out a Plan to Push 2 Megawatts Down a Single Rack Row

Nvidia will release an 800 volt DC power rack in the second half of this year. It bolts onto the alternating current wiring a building already has, without tearing out the electrical plant. The roadmap circulated first through Taiwanese press, but the source is Nvidia itself. The same plan went up on the company blog on August 11. Why raise the voltage Inside a rack today, chips are fed at 54 volts DC. Low voltag…

Why it matters. Rack draw has widened roughly fivefold in a few years while building distribution stayed put, moving the bottleneck in AI data centers from GPU supply to the gear that carries power to the rack.

YMTC Is Now Third in NAND by Volume, Still Fifth by Revenue

China's YMTC ranked third in NAND by bit shipments in the second quarter of 2026, passing Micron and SanDisk and edging past Kioxia by one place. NAND is the chip that holds the photos on a phone and the files on a laptop. It keeps its contents with the power off, and data centers stack it by the rack. Third by bits, fifth by dollars This market gets ranked two ways. Bit shipments count how many gigabytes went o…

Why it matters. With AI servers pulling NAND volume and prices up, a supplier outside the US export-control perimeter reaching third place on shipments puts a ceiling on what Samsung and SK hynix can charge.

Taxing only the real gain: can a president do it alone?

President Trump is weighing a cut to capital gains taxes ahead of the midterm elections, Bloomberg reported on August 11. The discussions are said to include indexing, which subtracts inflation from a gain before the tax is calculated. Nominal gain and real gain Say you buy a stock for $100,000 and sell it five years later for $200,000. Today the tax lands on the whole gain. If prices rose 20 percent over those f…

Why it matters. Indexing changes the after-tax return on any long-held asset. But the size of the break is set by whether it applies retroactively and by the form it takes, and neither has been decided.

One month after the joint venture was set up, the start date moved back a year

Samsung Electro-Mechanics has pushed the start of glass substrate mass production out to 2028. The revision came less than a month after the company set up a joint venture and named the second half of 2027 as its start date. The Korea Herald reported on July 2 that Samsung Electro-Mechanics was setting up a joint venture capitalized at 480 billion won with Dongwoo Fine-Chem, a subsidiary of Japan's Sumitomo Chemica…

Why it matters. Glass substrates have been treated as the next component needed to make AI accelerator packages bigger. When the company itself moves that schedule back a year within a month, it means the engineering is harder than the outside expected.

India's EUR 5.5 billion, oil products' 45%, and Russia's total 12%

India bought EUR 5.5 billion of Russian crude oil in July, a record for the second month running and 2.1% more than in June. That number is being read as proof that Russia is the big winner of this war. Another line in the same report says the opposite: what Russia earned from selling fossil fuels actually fell in July. It came to EUR 683 million a day, 12% less than in June. Crude held up, refined products collap…

Why it matters. Take one country's record import bill on its own and sanctions look ineffective, yet in the same tally Russia's total revenue fell. Volume and revenue are different numbers, and the tariff bargaining with India rides on that gap.

Temasek is said to be buying Korean stock for the first time. In 2018 it sold a trillion won of it

A Korean exclusive published on August 12 says Singapore's sovereign wealth fund Temasek is buying into Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. After the report circulated, Samsung closed 4.1% higher at 239,500 won and SK Hynix 0.4% higher at 1,425,000 won. The report called this Temasek's "first ever investment in the Korean stock market." It also carried an investment banker's line that Temasek sees memory chips as the…

Why it matters. News that a sovereign wealth fund is coming in moves prices by itself, but here the buyer, the size and the timing are unconfirmed, and the position is unlikely to reach the disclosure threshold, so the market cannot verify it. The phrase 'first ever' also sits badly with the 2010 Celltrion investment.

The 11.62% published today is not a stake that survives today

A change report filed with Japan's financial regulator on August 12 shows Situational Awareness holding 15,741,400 shares of Japanese component maker Taiyo Yuden, or 11.6% of the company. Earlier the same morning, a first large shareholding report also appeared, showing the fund crossing the disclosure line for the first time. Set the two papers side by side and the holding doubles in under three weeks. The dates…

Why it matters. When a disclosure lands late, an old book reads like today's trading. Here the obligation date and the filing date are more than a month apart, and in between came reports that the holder was forced out of all public stock.

The $87 billion spent on the yen is not a number Japan published

The $87 billion said to have been spent defending the yen is not a figure the Japanese government published. It is an estimate, reconstructed by a private analyst from movements in the Bank of Japan's current account balances. That the intervention happened is confirmed. Japan and the US bought yen together across July 30 and 31, and on August 3 the finance authorities of both countries acknowledged it. It was the…

Why it matters. The size of the operation has not been officially confirmed, and in all four past episodes the move was retraced until the rate gap itself moved. What sets the yen's direction is the September meeting, not the amount bought.

US card delinquency sits near a 2011 high, and it fell from the prior quarter

12.9% of credit card debt in the US is more than 90 days past due. That is close to the highest level since 2011. The figure comes from the quarterly household debt report the New York Fed released on August 11. Every three months it tallies what American households owe and how much of it has gone unpaid. The phrase "90+ days delinquent" counts money, not people. It does not tell you how many borrowers out of a hu…

Why it matters. This measure counts late dollars, not late borrowers. If the amount banks write off keeps shrinking while the share of late dollars stays high, the burden is gathering on a smaller number of households.

There are now 66 million Americans over 65, and the money for them runs out in 2032

The trust fund behind US Social Security old-age benefits empties in the fourth quarter of 2032. That lands several years before the 65-and-over population is projected to reach 78 million. The population figures posted on August 11 have to be read next to that date. Where the 66 million comes from In the last population estimate the Census Bureau published, the 65-and-over population was 61.2 million, or 18.0 per…

Why it matters. Aging arrives slowly, but the budget arrives on a specific date. The moment benefits fall to 78 percent comes before the population reaches 78 million, and Treasury issuance and the tax debate tighten toward that date.
