There Is No $1 Billion Pile of Apple Chips Sitting at TSMC
A recent media report claims that tight DRAM supply has left TSMC holding around US$1 billion worth of Apple 2nm processor work-in-process (WIP), described in the report as “processor wafers,” that cannot yet be packaged. As supporting evidence, it points to TSMC’s 2Q26 earnings…
A report said TSMC is sitting on about $1 billion worth of Apple 2nm processors it cannot package, because there is not enough DRAM to move them to the next stage.

The inventory-days evidence
The evidence cited was a line from TSMC's July earnings call. Inventory days had gone up, and the company said the reason was the 2nm ramp. Inventory days is what a company is holding but has not sold, divided by one day's cost of goods. Read it as how many days of stuff is sitting in the warehouse.
The build-up itself is real. But the only reason TSMC gave was the 2nm ramp, and it never named a customer. Kuo's assumption does not conflict with these numbers.

What sits inside that number
TSMC's inventory line is not just half-built wafers. Finished goods, raw materials, supplies and spare parts all sit in the same box. Inventory days also tend to rise whenever an advanced node first ramps, so this year is not special. And Apple is not alone in the 2nm queue this year. AMD and MediaTek are on the same process.

The memory shortage itself is real
Kuo does not dispute the shortage. He says it is exactly why Apple has cut its hardware shipment plans for the year.

October is where the two stories split
The two accounts are describing different things. The report says finished-but-stuck product piled up. Kuo says that much was never built. The gap matters. If the first is right, a wave of held-back units lands the moment memory loosens. If the second is right, the volume was already cut before it was made. For the same September iPhone, one story says wait and you can buy it, the other says fewer were ever planned. The split comes at the third quarter call in October. If inventory days come down from this quarter, it was a temporary bulge while 2nm ramped. If they climb further, something really is piling up.
