Nothing shows Apple's chips are what pushed TSMC to 87 days of inventory

In other words, tight memory supply is real.

But my understanding is that there has been no dramatic scenario in which TSMC first built up US$1 billion of WIP and then had to wait for memory to arrive before packaging could proceed.

A story went around last week that $1 billion of Apple 2nm processors were sitting unpackaged because the memory to finish them could not be found. Ming-Chi Kuo, the Taiwan-based semiconductor analyst, has effectively denied it.

The claim began in the newsletter of Tim Culpan, a journalist based in Taiwan, and spread when DigiTimes carried the same account the same day. The evidence offered for it was TSMC's inventory.

The inventory really did rise

A chipmaker's days of inventory expresses how many days of sales the stock on hand corresponds to. When that number grows, the usual reading is that more has been built than sold.

The rise is real. But TSMC's chief financial officer attributed it to the N2 ramp, and the measure also counts finished goods, raw materials and spare parts, so Apple's chips cannot be separated out of it.

This is the point Kuo presses. Inventory days usually rise when an advanced node first ramps, which is not unique to this year, and Apple is not the only customer on 2nm in 2026: AMD and MediaTek are there too.

Why packaging would need the memory

For the report to hold, one condition has to be true. The memory has to be present at the moment the processor is packaged. Phone processors have long been built with DRAM sitting on top of the chip as a single block. Apple's next-generation processor is said to move that pairing further upstream, binding processor and memory into the same module. If so, the picture of packaging halting and wafers piling up for want of memory does hold together. That detail, though, also comes from Culpan's reporting, and neither Apple nor TSMC has confirmed it.

What both sides say

On one point the two do not disagree. Kuo says his own checks confirm that Apple has cut its hardware shipment plans this year because of the memory shortage.

The same report names the Mac Studio, the Mac mini and the MacBook Air, and says the iPhone 18 Pro line due in September will not be plentiful either. The explanation offered is that memory makers are filling higher-margin data-centre orders first, pushing consumer devices back in the queue. So what is actually in dispute is not whether memory is short but where that shortage has come to a stop. If it is stuck at the packaging step, September's launch volumes are directly at risk; if it was absorbed at the ordering stage, the volumes were planned smaller from the start and the launch itself proceeds. If the Q3 inventory days TSMC reports in October come back below 87, this build was the mark of a node ramping; if they hold or climb, another reason is still there.
