Lumentum has reserved indium phosphide wafer capacity in advance and put down $43.5 million. That money is not payment for goods. It buys a place in line for output that does not exist yet.

The press release shows the deposit is not a single payment. The first $43.5 million is due within 30 business days, and a second deposit of the same size has terms to be set in 2028. The agreement runs through December 31, 2031, and the deposits later credit against shipments.

The $43.5 million in the original post is half of it. The committed amount is double that and the contract runs five and a half years. Holding the place costs more than the post shows.

What indium phosphide is for

Inside a data center, data moving between servers and switches travels as light rather than through copper. Indium phosphide is the wafer that the laser chips making that light are built on. The more GPUs get wired together, the more optical modules sit between them, and every module needs lasers. Lumentum makes those modules and lasers. AXT makes the wafer the lasers are grown on. The money went two steps up the chain, to materials rather than to finished parts.

Why pay a deposit at all

AXT is a small company. First-quarter 2026 revenue was $26.9 million, of which indium phosphide was $13.6 million. The $87 million of deposits is more than three quarters of that revenue. This is a large customer putting cash into a small supplier to hold production slots. There is one more condition the original post did not mention. AXT's wafers are made by its Chinese subsidiary, Beijing Tongmei. Shipping indium phosphide out of China requires an export permit from China's Ministry of Commerce, and the company's revenue has swung quarter to quarter with the timing of those permits.

In that report the chief executive said the single biggest factor in growth for the second quarter and beyond is the success and timing of getting export permits. The same report notes that shipments staying inside China need no permit. What the prepaying customer wants is wafers. What it has actually bought is priority once the permits come through.

The same $87 million reads either as proof that demand is fixed, or as the price of supply that is not.

So what should we watch

It comes down to one question. Does a factory or a piece of paperwork set the speed at which this deposit turns into revenue? If quarterly revenue and indium phosphide revenue step up together, the permits are flowing. If backlog builds while revenue sits still, the bottleneck is the paperwork, not the plant. The company was carrying a backlog above $100 million as of the first quarter. In AI buildouts, whatever is scarce shows up as the place money goes first. That place moved from GPUs to power, from power to optical modules, and now to the wafer beneath the modules.
