Reuters reports that the company, Volta Infra, is seven months old and was valued at $2.4 billion while raising $300 million across a seed and a Series A. The contract and the funding round were announced on the same day. Nvidia, Andreessen Horowitz, Altimeter and the asset manager Azora are listed among the backers. Bloomberg broke the story, and Reuters noted it could not independently verify the terms.

Where does this money actually go

Bitdeer began as a bitcoin miner. Mining halls need cheap power and cooling, which is why they settle in places like Norway, and AI training asks for the same two things. That overlap is why swapping mining rigs for graphics processors has become a common move in the industry.

What Volta is actually holding

Bitdeer's own press release sets out the lease terms. The tenant is Volta Tydal AS, and the rent over the base term adds up to $4.7 billion. Exercising the eight-year extension in full would take it to $8 billion over 24 years. Of the power, 121 megawatts is critical IT capacity, backed by 133 gross megawatts. The rate runs near $202 per kilowatt-month and steps up 3 percent a year. Bitdeer keeps ownership of the campus. It also funds the $500 million of construction still to come.

The price of choosing Tydal in Norway

Where the electricity comes from, and at what price, is the spine of this deal. Norway runs heavily on hydropower, so power is cheap and low in carbon, and the cool climate takes the edge off cooling costs. Bitdeer's chief financial officer framed the agreement as pairing Nvidia's newest chips with carbon-free energy. Adding this much new power inside the United States commonly means years of waiting in a grid interconnection queue. Skipping that queue is what going to Europe buys.

First power arrives on 31 December

Phase one is targeted for 31 December 2026 and phase two for 31 March 2027. The contract to sell the capacity is already signed, while the date on which the capacity comes into existence is still ahead. Markets picked the most certain link in the chain first. Bitdeer, which holds the power and the buildings, jumped sharply intraday on the announcement and closed 7.8 percent higher. Volta, the company that won the contract, is private and carries no price at all. For Anthropic this adds one more route to compute that is not tied to a single cloud provider. In the middle of that route stands a company with no operating record, and if it stumbles the power and the buildings stay with Bitdeer while the contract goes back to the negotiating table.
