Reuters reported that China's CXMT is considering building a second DRAM fab in Beijing's Yizhuang district, in addition to the new fabs currently under construction in Shanghai and Hefei.
The proposed second Beijing fab is not included in that figure.
China's DRAM maker CXMT is considering a second fab in Beijing's Yizhuang district, Reuters reports. The company is said to be in talks for at least 60 million yuan, about $8.9 million, from the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area. Once the fabs already going up in Shanghai and Hefei are running, CXMT's wafer input more than doubles to over 600,000 a month. The Beijing fab now being discussed is not yet counted in that figure.

A wafer is the round silicon disc chips are printed on. The size of a fab is measured by how many of those discs it can start in a month. Tom's Hardware laid out this year's estimates from Citrini Research. For 2026 they put CXMT at 350,000 a month, Micron at 375,000, SK hynix at 590,000 and Samsung at 720,000.

The fabs already under construction are enough to put a Chinese company on the same line as SK hynix. The Beijing fab being discussed now would sit on top of that.
Reuters puts the cost of a leading-edge 12-inch DRAM fab at more than $10 billion. The $8.9 million being sought from the local government is under 0.1% of that. So it is more natural to read the money as something other than construction funding. It looks closer to a sign that the district has taken the project on as its own, securing land, permits and the slot where much larger money arrives later. The same report says CXMT already runs a fab in Yizhuang with capacity of about 100,000 wafers a month.
One thing is left. Wafer count and the memory capacity that actually reaches the market are not the same statement. The finer the circuits, the more chips come off a single disc, and the more capacity each chip holds. This is where China is blocked. Barred from buying ASML's most advanced lithography machines, its makers work around the limit with older DUV tools, and that ceiling already showed up once in the speed of the LPDDR6 CXMT produced.
600,000 a month is SK hynix scale. Pour that into commodity DRAM and prices break first.
If each disc yields less capacity, doubling the disc count does not double the gigabytes that reach the market.
Both readings agree that pricing takes pressure. What splits them is when the pressure arrives and which products it reaches.
The question comes down to one thing. Whether this marks the point where China's DRAM volume push began, or is still talk at the planning stage. Two things settle it. Whether the Beijing fab actually breaks ground, and whether what comes out of Shanghai and Hefei stays in commodity DDR5 and LPDDR or climbs into high-specification server parts. Reuters carried this on sources, and did not say the company had confirmed it. Plans at this stage sometimes arrive as described and sometimes disappear quietly. The two earlier fabs, though, are already being built, so the 600,000 figure is not a plan. It stands on construction sites.
